In the Bill Lawson Showcase Classic, the SportsQuest
Spartans were up against Meadowbrook High School in a back and forth matchup
that went down to the wire with the Spartans hitting a last second shot to win
the thrilling game 53-52. Numerous lead
changes in the first half kept the game tense as both teams traded baskets and
defensive stops. Curt Jones dished out 4 assists in the first half and Jordan
Swopshire added 6 points as the Spartans trailed by three at the halfway point.
The second half proved to be scarce of a lot of points due to stifling defense
by both teams. Filip Music, George Mumin, and Zach Tabrani were the unsung
heroes due to their contributions on the defensive end in the 3rd
quarter to hold Meadowbrook to only 5 points scored. The second half belonged
to Marsellis Purvis, who scored 11 of his team high 19 points in the 3rd
and 4th periods. After grabbing the rebound and calling timeout, the
Spartans had one shot at the win. Filip Music drove into the lane and dished
the ball to Brian White who narrowly missed the basket. Luckily Marsellis Purvis crashed the glass
hard and grabbed the rebound and put the shot up. He missed that shot and
grabbed his own rebound, and as time expired put up the last shot that went in.
It was an extremely entertaining game and both teams played very hard.
